Makeup
For Ariane Cecile photo sessions, we usually provide a hair and makeup stylist as part of the package. If you decide to opt out of those services, here are a few notes to keep in mind.
When we photograph children, we’ll provide clean, clear, age-appropriate makeup.
We know that in Colorado, many women opt for minimal makeup or a very natural style. But if you do want to make yourself up, here are some important dos and don’ts:
Dos:
Prep your skin: Ensure your skin is clean and moisturized before applying makeup. Use a toner and maybe a primer to create a smooth canvas for your foundation.
If you use foundation, choose one with a natural finish that matches your skin tone. Avoid heavy, cakey formulas that can appear unnatural in photographs.
Use concealer sparingly and strategically: Apply concealer to hide any blemishes, dark circles, or discoloration. Blend it seamlessly into your foundation for a flawless look.
Define your eyebrows: Well-groomed and defined eyebrows can frame your face beautifully. Fill in any sparse areas with a brow pencil or powder to create a polished look.
Enhance your eyes: Use neutral or complementary eyeshadow shades to enhance your eyes. Keep the application subtle and blend well for a soft, natural look. False lashes or mascara are a personal choice, but our portraits don’t usually focus on glamour.
Contouring and highlighting are not necessary, and can make your face harder to light! Please let our lights and cameras do the work for you!
Blush: Lightly apply a soft blush to the apples of your cheeks for a healthy, natural flush. Opt for shades that complement your skin tone. One great trick is to use a tiny bit of your lip color to match the lips!
Lipstick: Choose one that is long-lasting and doesn't require frequent touch-ups. Matte or satin finishes tend to photograph well. Bright, high-contrast, glossy color should be avoided.
Set your makeup: Use a setting powder or spray to lock your makeup in place and prevent shine. This helps your makeup last longer during the photoshoot.
Don'ts:
Don't overdo the foundation: Applying too much foundation can make your skin appear heavy and cakey in photographs. Use a light hand and build coverage gradually.
Avoid using products with SPF! While SPF is essential for everyday use, it can cause a white cast or flashback in flash photography. Choose makeup products without SPF for portrait sessions.
Don't forget to blend: blend your foundation, concealer, and other products well to avoid harsh lines or visible edges. Use a blending sponge, brush, or your fingers for a seamless finish.
Avoid using shimmery or glittery products: they can reflect light in photographs and create unwanted shine or distractions. Stick to matte or satin finishes.
Don't neglect your neck and décolletage: Ensure that your foundation is blended seamlessly into your neck and décolletage to maintain a uniform look.
Avoid excessive contouring: While contouring can add depth to your features, avoid going overboard with it. Harsh contour lines can look unnatural in photographs. Remember to blend well for a softer effect.
Don't forget to check your makeup in different lighting: Lighting conditions can vary during a photoshoot. Before the session, check your makeup in different lighting settings to ensure it looks flattering in all scenarios.
Avoid using trendy or extreme makeup styles: Opt for classic, timeless makeup looks that will stand the test of time. Avoid trendy or extreme makeup styles that might date the photographs.
Don't rush! Take your time while applying your makeup and ensure everything is well-blended and perfected. Rushing through the process can lead to mistakes that might be challenging to fix later.
Remember, the goal of makeup in portrait photography is to enhance your features while maintaining a natural and polished appearance. Adapt these guidelines to suit your personal style, and your portraits will turn out great!
